Walk to Everest Base Camp the way the original expeditions did, starting from Salleri, through green Solu villages and Sherpa farmland, with no flight to Lukla and far fewer trekkers on the early trail.

Salleri to Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is not as common or well known as the traditional Lukla to EBC trek, but it offers a unique and less traveled route to reach the iconic base camp of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Saleri is a small village located in the Solukhumbu district in Nepal. Trekkers opting for the Salleri to EBC route typically start their journey from this lesser-known village instead of Lukla.

The exact trekking route from Salleri to Everest Base Camp may vary depending on the specific itinerary chosen by trekkers or trekking companies. However, the general path usually involves trekking through remote and less traveled trails to eventually connect with the main Everest Base Camp trekking route somewhere along the Khambu region. The Salleri to Everest Base Camp trek is likely to take a similar amount of time as the Lukla to EBC trek, typically around 13-15 days. The difficulty level can vary depending on the specific trail conditions, elevation gains, and overall trekking experience offered by the less traveled route.

While the Salleri to EBC trek may not have the same level infrastructure and tea house facilities as the Lukla route, it offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience for trekkers who prefer solitude and exploration of less visited areas in the Everest region. As with trek in the Everest region, proper acclimatization is crucial during the Salleri to Everest Base Camp trek to prevent altitude sickness and ensure a safe journey.

Trekkers should follow a gradual ascent plan, stay hydrated and be aware of the symptom of altitude related illness. Trekkers choosing the Salleri to Everest Base Camp route should ensure they have the necessary permits, gear and supplies for the journey as the facilities and services may be limited compared to the more Lukla route. It is advisable to trek with a local guide or reputable trekking company familiar with the area.

The weather conditions in the Everest region can be unpredictable so the best time to trek from Salleri to Everest Base Camp is during pre-monsoon (spring) season from March to May or the post-monsoon (autumn) season from September to November. These periods offer clear skies, stable weather and optimal trekking conditions for a memorable and safe adventure. Salleri to Everest Base Camp trek is less traveled and may pose some logistical challenges compared to the traditional Lukla route, it can provide adventurous trekkers with the unique and immersive Himalayan experience away from the crowds, offering a different perspective on the stunning landscapes and culture of the Everest region.

Why Choose Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek?

  • The traditional approach: Starting at Salleri follows the old Solu Khumbu route that mountaineers used before the Lukla airstrip opened.
  • No flight dependency: Weather delays and cancellations at Lukla can disrupt your schedule. A road start avoids that risk on the way in.
  • Quiet trails: The Solu section passes rhododendron and bamboo forests, terraced fields and Rai, Sherpa and Tamang villages, mostly without crowds.
  • Better acclimatization: You gain altitude gradually over several days of walking, so your body has more time to adjust than on a fly-in itinerary.
  • Cultural depth: You’ll see monasteries, mani walls, prayer flags and local farming life before reaching the high Khumbu.
  • Full Everest experience: After joining the main trail near Phakding, you continue to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Gorak Shep, Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
  • Local expertise: Guided by experienced Nepali guides with the support of local lodges and porters.

Difficulty In Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek

Moderate to Challenging.

  • The Solu section has long up-and-down days through forested hills, often 5 to 7 hours of walking.
  • The upper Khumbu section brings high altitude, cold and thin air.
  • Typical duration is about 16 to 18 days, so good stamina matters more than technical skill.
  • No climbing experience is needed, but regular cardio, hiking and leg-strength training for 6 to 8 weeks beforehand is strongly recommended.

Altitude Info Of Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek

  • Salleri: about 2,400 m
  • Namche Bazaar: 3,440 m

  • Dingboche: 4,410 m
  • Gorak Shep: 5,164 m
  • Everest Base Camp: 5,364 m
  • Kala Patthar (highest point): 5,545 m

Acclimatization days at Namche and Dingboche are built into the itinerary. The gradual ascent from Salleri helps, but altitude sickness can still affect anyone, so it’s worth knowing the early signs: headache, nausea, dizziness and poor sleep.
