Overview

Our tranquil journey to the Upper Mustang for 17 days is an immersive journey to Nepal’s remote Himalayan region. This trek is a tranquil blend of rich Tibetan culture and the striking landscapes of northwestern Nepal. We will start this trek with a day of preparations and exploring a few of the UNESCO-listed heritage sites before embarking on the trek. Also, we will have a chance to stroll around Pokhara’s valley and around the Fewa lakeside.

  The official start of this trek will be from Jomsom after an enchanting flight from Pokhara. We will trek to Kagbeni and enter the restricted area of the Upper Mustang region. Upper Mustang is decorated with rugged trails, traditional settlements, and culturally vibrant villages. We will pass the Nya Li Pass and reach Lo Manthang, which is an ancient capital of Mustang, also known as the walled capital. We will explore the ancient monasteries and royal palaces of the steep Tibetan Heritage. The trek continues to Drakmar, which is also a traditional village with Tibetan influence. We will descend from there, following the Kali Gandaki River back to Jomsom.

We will then fly back to Pokhara and relax by the lake. We will stroll around the lakeside in the evening and try to immerse ourselves in the local vibes and foods. The trek offers us a rare glimpse into an ancient and restricted valley of Mustang and its preserved cultural heritage. The trek collaborates with the high-altitude landscapes with elevations that reach up to 3950m, which is a steep ascent. Best Seasons for the Upper Mustang Trek

Autumn (September-November)

The season of Autumn provides better weather and bustling trails to Upper Mustang. This season provides clear skies with mild temperatures. We will have a perfect view of the stunning Himalayan views. The weather is particularly dry and stable, which ensures the safe trails along the way. Also, the landscapes will be vibrant post-monsoon. If the time is right, we will have a chance to celebrate the festivals like Tiji, Dashain, and Tihar during the season.

Spring (March-May)

Springs arrive with pleasant weather for the Upper Mustang trek in offering. The temperatures are mild between 10 to 22 degrees, depending on the elevation. With the blooming flora in areas like Jomsom and Pokhara, the season gets decorated. The clear sky will provide the vibrant views of the towering peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The history of Upper Mustang dates back to the 14th century. This kingdom was influenced by Tibetan culture and remained semi-autonomous. The palace of Lo Manthang and Upper Mustang are legends of a rich past and history.

The region is decorated with the cultural vibrance through the ancient gumbas and monasteries. Locals maintain a minimalist traditional lifestyle with the vibrant rituals and art, preserving their unique heritage. The locals are hospitable in their traditional values.

Geography

Upper Mustang’s arid and high-altitude desert landscape features eroded cliffs and deep canyons. The Kali Gandaki River creates a stark and dramatic terrain framed by Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri.

The flora and fauna are not particularly diverse on the trekking trail. Vegetation majorly includes hardy shrubs and grasses. Wildlife features rare Himalayan wildlife like blue sheep and snow leopards.

Difficulty of the Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek isn’t a hard trek to complete. This is a moderately challenging adventure that requires good fitness due to the high altitudes and longer trekking days. This trek is suitable even for everyone who is fit.

  • We will trek up to 3950 meters in Nyi La La Pass. This ascent requires acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness.
  • We will hike for about 6-7 hours daily, so we need endurance to cover the distance.
  • The trail includes steep ascents and a rocky path. We need balanced physical stamina.
  • The remote conditions of the trek might require basic trekking gear and adaptability.

 Altitude Sickness

Altitude

We reach up to 3950 meters during the crossing of Nyi La Pass. This section of the trek requires careful pacing and monitoring during the trek.

Acclimatization

Acclimatization is an important part of successful trekking. During the trek, we have scheduled mild walks of 4-5 hours for some days and have a rest day in Lo Manthang to adapt to the high altitude.

Precaution

To prevent altitude sickness, we have to ascend slowly and stay hydrated. We must avoid alcoholic beverages and monitor the symptoms, like headaches. We need to carry the first aid kit and consult the guides about the symptoms.

Basic Treatment

For mild altitude sickness, we should rest, hydrate, and take medications like Diamox for relief. Serious conditions require immediate actions like descending or emergency evacuation.

 Rescue

The rescue in the Upper Mustang section involved an emergency evacuation. Mostly by horse and helicopter from Jomsom. We recommend having travel insurance that covers the recovery of expenses incurred in Helicopter evacuations.

Food During the Upper Mustang Trek

Food served in Kathmandu and Pokhara will be of ample choices with the Nepali, Indian, Chinese, and continental options on the menu. Even in Jomsom, some restaurants provide a variety of food. During the trek, we will have limited but nutritious choices of food that feature dal, bhat, pasta, and noodle-like food. The food will be hygienic and heartily served by the local teahouses. As we go higher, the options and amenities decrease.

Accommodations During the Upper Mustang Trek

We will stay in the basic teahouses throughout the Upper Mustang trek. The teahouses have the basic facilities available. The rooms typically are twin-sharing with shared bathrooms. Accommodation facilities will be comfortable in Jomsom with private rooms with attached bathrooms available. We recommend that you have a sleeping bag carried with you for more comfortable sleep during the colder nights. Amenities like hot showers and Wi-Fi are not accessible in the remote villages like Lo-Manthang and Chele.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara [823m/2,700ft]: 6 hrs drive

    A drive that is scenic to Pokhara to Kathmandu provides us with great scenery and lush forests along the rivers of Trishuli and Seti.  Pokhara provides the most amazing views of the reflecting Annapurna range in the Fewa Lake. We will first check into our hotel and relax by Phewa Lake. This day will be full of joy and scenery.

  • Day 2: Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom & trek to Kagbeni [2,858m/9,375ft]: 3-4 hrs

    This short flight leads us towards Jomsom over the aerial route of the Annapurna range. This 30-minute flight provides scenic views of the Himalayas from an aerial perspective. After landing in Jomsom, we will have a short 3-4 hour trek to Kagbeni. Kagbeni is a medieval-style village that introduces us to Mustang’s unique Tibetan-influenced culture.

  • Day 3: Kagbeni to Chele [3,050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs

    We will trek to Chele today. This trail to Chele winds along the Kali Gandaki river with the majestic views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri peaks. We will encounter the traditional and cultural Mustang villages along the way. Chele is a small settlement with a few stone houses and terraced fields. This day will set a tone for the higher adventure ahead.

  • Day 4: Chele to Syanbochen [3,475m/11,398ft]: 6-7 hrs

    We have a forthcoming ascent of about 7 hours till we reach the stopover in Syanbochen. The trail involves steep climbs and descents through the rocky and rugged terrain. We will traverse through the remote villages like Samar. This day will expose us to the rich cultural heritage of Mustang. We will stay and spend our night in a traditionally crafted teahouse.

  • Day 5: Syanbochen to Ghaymi [3,520m/11,546ft]: 5-6 hrs

    We will continue the walk from Syangbochen to Ghaymi for about 5 hours. We will traverse the major pass of Nyi La Pass at 3950m.  This pass is also the highest we will travel towards the Upper Mustang in this trek. We will descend with the colourful cliffs and sparse vegetation to Ghayami, which is known for its warm hospitality and traditional architecture. We will stay in Ghayami, interacting with the locals and experiencing the cultural richness of the village.

  • Day 6: Ghaymi to Charang [3,500m/11,480ft]: 4-5 hrs

    This day will be full of trekking from Ghayami to Charang. We will have a descent, slightly steeper for almost 5 hours. The trail passes through the open landscapes and the longest mani wall in Mustang. The historic village of Charang possesses with the ancient monastery that reflects the village’s rich and diverse history.

  • Day 7: Charang to Lo-Mangthang [3,700m/12,136ft]: 5-6 hrs

    We will have another gradual ascent towards Lo Manthang. Lo Manthang is an ancient capital of Upper Mustang. It is barred by the walls. The palace is a cultural heart of Mustang. The trail ascends with the offerings of eroded cliffs and distant snow-capped peaks. This day marks our achievement towards the monasteries and a royal palace. The Tibetan-influenced culture that was unseen is now seen.

  • Day 8: Explore Lo-Mangthang

    This day is a rest day in Lo Manthang. We will dedicate this day to exploring the eroded ancient capital of this royal kingdom. We will have a chance to visit the 115th-century monasteries of Thubchen and Jampa. Also, we will visit the King’s Palace. We have optional horse rides around the village and hikes to the neighbouring villages to immerse ourselves in the local culture and practices. This day is pivotal for exploring rich Tibetan Culture and stark against the desert landscapes.

  • Day 9: Lo-Mangthang to Drakmar [3,810m/12,500ft]: 6-7 hrs

    We will cross ridges offering the crispy and beautiful views of cliffs and mountains in the surroundings. We will walk for about 6-7 hours to reach Dramkar. Drakmar features ancient caves and a tranquil setting is named after its red cliffs. The trek today is a mild ascent and descent towards the red cliffs. We will have a great show of the region’s dramatic geology and beauty.

  • Day 10: Drakmar to Ghiling [3,806m/12,484ft]: 5-6 hrs

    Today’s trek involved through the rugged terrain, steep ascents, and descents. Today, we will maintain a high altitude of 3806m for over 6 hours. We will encounter local monasteries and chortens against the striking landscapes of Mustang. We will later reach Ghiling, which is a charming village with a rural setting. We will enjoy the views of the surroundings and have a restful evening in a teahouse.

  • Day 11: Ghiling to Chhuksang [3,050m/10,004ft]: 5-6 hrs

    Today’s descendants of Ghiling will follow the route of the Kali Gandaki River. The trail passes through the rugged terrain and arid valleys with few small settlements in between. The village of Chhuksang is nestled at the base of red cliffs at a relatively lower altitude. The journey will offer stunning views of the Nilgiri and Mustang. The trail will blend the physical exertion with cultural encounters and immersions.

  • Day 12: Chhuksang to Jomsom [2,700m/8,856ft]: 6-7 hrs

    This is the last of our descendants. We will wake early and trek towards Jomsom for about 7 hours. The trail will join us with the path of the Kali Gandaki River. We will join the trail to Jomsom along the river. Jomsom is a tourist hub of Mustang with relatively modern facilities than the trail. We will spend an exhilarating evening in Jomsom and sleep comfortably in the guesthouse.

  • Day 13: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara

    We will take an early morning flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. This is a short but scenic and buzzing journey over the Himalayas.  We will be welcomed by the striking and panoramic views of the Annapurna range peaks during the flight to Pokhara. We will arrive in the city of lakes, i.e, Pokhara. We have a full day opportunity to relax and stroll around the city of buzz and local foods.

  • Day 14: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

    This will be the final embark before the departure. We will arrive in Kathmandu by evening and check into our hotel rooms. We have an opportunity to explore Thame, which is a vibrant market for tourists in Nepal. We will have a celebration dinner to reflect our enchanting journey in Upper Mustang.

FAQs of Upper Mustang Trekking

  • 1. What drinks are available during the trek?

    Safe Drinking water is available everywhere throughout the trek. Tea, coffee, and local drinks like chhyang and Marfa(the local brandy) are available. We do not recommend alcoholic beverages for this trek in the higher areas, but you can taste them in Jomsom.
  • 2. What food can we expect on the trek?

    Meals during the trek are not varied but nutritious. Generic items like Tibetan bread, momo, thukpa, and dal bhat are widely available in the teahouses. Food in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Jomsom is variable, with ample options.
  • 3. How should we tip guides and porters?

    Tipping the guides and porters is considered a gesture to show appreciation for the hardworking personnel. We recommend USD 10-15 per day for a guide and USD 5-10 for porters, split among the groups.
  • 4. How should we respect local culture?

    We respect the local culture by bowing our heads and saying, “Namaste”. We ask permission before capturing the photos, and do not interfere with their daily rituals.
  • 5. What is the appropriate dress code?

    We will wear modest and functional clothing during the trek. The clothing should cover your shoulders to feet so that we can counter the cold in the higher altitudes.
  • 6. Are vegetarian meals available?

    You can have vegetarian meals during the trek. Also, you can pre-inform us if you want any special dietary needs or vegan options. All the options are available in the urban areas like Kathmandu. Local teahouses will easily provide vegetarian food with vegan options.
  • 7. Can we charge electronic devices?

    Most of the teahouses and hotels in the villages like Chhusang, Gheling, Chele, Syangboche, Charang, Lo Manthang and Kagbeni offer electricity for charging. However, due to the remoteness, the electricity is unreliable. We recommend that you have a personal power bank to charge your electronic devices.
  • 8. What are the permits required for the Upper Mustang trek?

    Upper Mustang trek requires ACAP and RAP permits. All Nepal Excursions will handle all the permits required for you after the completion of the booking.
  • 9. Are there any specific rules I need to follow while in Upper Mustang?

    Yes, while in Upper Mustang, you must trek with a licensed guide, hold the required Restricted Area and ACAP permits, respect local customs (such as walking clockwise around religious sites), dress modestly, avoid littering or using plastic, and refrain from climbing sacred sites, as solo trekking and cultural disrespect are not permitted.
  • 10. How cold does it get on the trek?

    Temperatures on the Upper Mustang Trek can drop to around -5°C to -10°C (23°F to 14°F) at night, especially in Lo Manthang and higher areas during spring and autumn. Daytime temperatures are generally mild, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), but it can feel colder due to wind and altitude.
  • 11. How far is Upper Mustang Trek from Kathmandu?

    The Upper Mustang Trek is approximately 380 to 400 kilometers (236 to 250 miles) from Kathmandu. To reach the trekking starting point, you’ll first travel to Pokhara (by flight or road), then take a domestic flight to Jomsom, where the trek begins.
